Recommendation for saltwater fishing

For small fish including bass in blackish water area, you'd better avoid freshwater only reels like Shimano Calais MG, Chronarch MG, Daiwa TD-Z and etc. These models do not have enough salt-resistance, and they will not last long if they are used in the salty water and left without proper maintenace.

There are saltwater version reels like Millionaire Bay Casting, and these have improved saltwater resistance than normal models. You may use normal models on saltwater though, these salt-specific reels have anti-rust ball bearings and salt-resistant parts for longer life. I strongly recommend these salt-specific reels for saltwater usage, because angler will see far little trouble on them.

Types Recommendation Alternatives (in order of from the second best) Reasoning
Low profile Daiwa Alphas 103, Antares AR/Calais AR,  Scorpion 1000, Antirust ball bearings, easy maintenance
Round shaped Millionaire Bay Casting SP  Shimano Conquest 200 Antirust ball bearings, super casting ability of TD-Z

For big fish (salmon, trout, stripers, and etc)

Candidates are naturally limited to Shimano TE/Conquest reels and Daiwa Millionaire CV-Z reels if you want the best. All candidates have good salt-resistance, and recently offered reels with anti-rust ball bearings are more recommended. CV-Z Japan reels are much more expensive than US reels, and comes with power handle and more ball bearings. Both have centrifugal brake and casting distance is similar.

Recommendation Alternatives (in order of from the second best) Reasoning
Shimano Conquest 300, 400, 401 TE300, 400, 301, 401 Great quality, size availability, Anti-rust ball bearings
Daiwa Millionaire CV-Z Japan 253, 253L, 300, Black Sheep 300 US CV-Z reels, CV-X Great drag, power handle for Japanese models, 6.1 gear for CV-Z 300
